Santal Pao Rosa L’Art & La Matière Guerlain

The difference between true niche perfumery and the stylized versions of the "big" perfume houses is immediately apparent. Yes, the focus is on raw materials, all those tired "precious ingredients" in press releases. Yes, all the bottles are identical, maybe even with mother-of-pearl and rhinestones for customers in countries where oil gushes right out of the window. But brands like Guerlain don't, and never have, attempted to appeal to the sophisticated consumer. There's none of that familiarity, where someone picks up a score and guesses at the "pyramids and notes" in the scent. Guerlain perfumes are completely seamless, although in the L'Art & La Matière collection they're somewhat less mysterious than the classics L'Heure Bleue or Chamade.

In Santal Pao Rosa, this seamlessness is literally felt on the skin. The scent glides over it like gray silk crepe. A traditional oriental pattern features a reddish fleck of caramel and a black ligature of vanilla, a cool green glow of cardamom, and the earthy, mushroomy tones of myrrh. Santal Pao Rosa warms briskly on the wrists, merging with their own slightly milky scent and the sleepy morning warmth, responding to every quickening of the pulse and echoing every movement of the body with a gentle rustle.

The boundary blurs, and suddenly it's not the fragrance, but you yourself, who smell like a gift from the Magi. The woody and spicy power only grows with time, but once you become one with the fragrance, you no longer know when it's all over, or even if it's over.

The pattern in Santal Pao Rosa is oriental, but the cut is entirely European. An example of the near-perfect assimilation of oud far from home. It's like Jean-Claude Van Damme in his famous split between trucks. And with the same self-confident smirk.

Unexpectedly, I love it and wear it with pleasure. Santal Pao Rosa is one of three fragrances in this collection that I'd love to bottle.

Santal Pao Rosa Guerlain,

Delphine Jelk

Sandalwood, fig, hazelnut, rose, oud, myrrh.
