Jean Paul Gaultier is a French fashion house founded by Jean-Paul Gaultier in 1975. The designer became famous as a master of shock value: he was the creator of men's skirts in the 1980s and Madonna's famous cone-shaped bra, creating one of the most recognizable images of pop culture of the last decade of the 20th century. In 1993, the designer signed a contract with BPI (Beauté Prestige International), the Parisian division of the Japanese concern Shiseido, and released his first fragrance, Classique. Gaultier dedicated it to his grandmother and personally developed the original design of the box: its role is played by a metal cylinder stylized as a tin can ("a can of cat food from a supermarket," explains the couturier). The author of the composition is Jacques Cavallier-Belletrude (he will later sign more than 10 of its versions, including the collector's edition Snow Globe). Gaultier himself drew a sketch of a bottle in the form of a female torso. Two years later, the first men's fragrance, Le Male, was released; its "nose" Francis Kurkdjian created a number of other compositions for the brand, including Fragile (1999) and Monsieur Eau du Matin (2008). At the same time, Classique and Le Male became the basis for collections of the same name and numerous flankers, released with modified bottle decor; they would make up the majority of the brand's new products over the next nine years. In 2008, the flagship Ma Dame was released. The outrageous model Agyness Deyn became its face, and the design of the rectangular bottles with the brand's signature corset inside was developed by Francesco Moretti; he also came up with the design for Kokorico (2011) and the "evening" version of Kokorico by Night (2012). In 2016, the license for Jean Paul Gaultier perfumes was transferred to the Spanish concern Puig. The brand adjusts the design of the iconic bottles: the male silhouette gets wider shoulders, the female one gets a thinner waist (“The silhouette has changed because the world has changed!” explains Gaultier) and releases two more flankers: Classique Essence de Parfum, created by Daphne Bugey, and Le Male Essence de Parfum by Quentin Bichat. In 2017, the house presents Scandal, the debut joint flagship of Jean Paul Gaultier and Puig, which they declared to be “the first attempt in a long time to break the feverish series of limited editions”. The glass bottle of a classic shape is decorated with an original cap in the form of women's legs (for the 2019 flanker, they will be “dressed” in Christmas stockings). The face of the fragrance is model Vanessa Axente; In the promotional video, she plays the role of a minister arriving at the Elysée Palace in the morning, straight from a wild nightclub party ("We decided to combine sex and politics in the advertising campaign," explained José Manuel Albesa, Puig's PR director). The authors of the composition are the creative trio of Daphne Bugey, Fabrice Pellegrin and Christophe Reynaud. In 2019, the duo Le Beau and La Belle, created by Sonia Constant and Quentin Bisch, the flankers Classique Cabaret and Le Male Supreme and a new version of Scandal - Scandal a Paris, whose face is Irina Shayk, are released. Following them, the brand returns to releasing flankers of the classic lines.
