When William Henry Penhaligon, a resident of the small British town of Pegasus, moved to London in 1860, no one even suspected that the young man would become the founder of not only a new perfume brand, but also a whole dynasty of perfume manufacturers.
Arriving in the British capital, William, although not immediately, nevertheless opened his own business - a hairdresser's, which had a small cosmetics store. The first fragrance from Penhaligon, which arrived in his own store, was presented to the public only in 1872. The composition called Hammam Bouquet became so popular that after a while this name was on the lips of a good half of London. This gentle, subtle and very sensual aroma is based on the freshness of bergamot, the sharp aroma of lavender, the unobtrusive lightness of jasmine and violet, the luxury of rose and notes of musk, sandalwood and amber.
Hammam Bouquet perfume has become a truly classic composition and has won a large army of fans, which is only growing with each decade. It is noteworthy that the Penhaligon’s brand produces this alluring and enveloping composition to this day. The first perfume helped Penhaligon break into the palace of the English kings.
For more than a hundred years, William’s descendants were at the helm of the Penhaligon’s company, but in the 70s of the last century, the situation changed. The Second World War became an understandable reason for the termination of the brand’s activities – all brand stores were destroyed. The revival of the business was undertaken by Sheila Pickles and Franco Zefirelli, who, with true English conservatism, decided not to change the established mechanism of the huge company’s work. The old recipes of numerous perfumes, which were left by the founder of the brand and his descendants, were not changed either. However, this rule is sometimes subject to change – modern technologies allow some improvements even to the perfect formulas from Penhaligon.
It is necessary to especially note the contribution of Sheila Pickles, to whom the brand owes much of its revival from the ashes. This amazing woman and talented perfumer was not stopped by the fact that the records of all the recipes burned in the destroyed shops. Sheila managed to restore all the recipes and reconstruct the old perfumes. Now the co-owner of the company is sure that history must be respected, but you need to live in the present time, so all the products of the brand correspond to this concept.
Another constant circumstance associated with this company is the love of the representatives of the royal palace. Created by a true patriot, the Penhaligon's brand is engaged in the release of products that reflect not only the English mentality, but also the whole essence of the mysterious soul of this people. Naturally, such an attitude to their own country could not go unnoticed, so the perfume company received the official title of Supplier to the British Court. However, the products of this brand are loved not only by British aristocrats - among its fans there are a large number of singers and actors.
