In 2006, Etienne de Swardt founded the perfume house Etat Libre d’Orange, named after his homeland. Etat Libre d’Orange (Orange Free State) was an autonomous sovereign republic that declared independence from the British government in 1854. It was a country of pristine beauty and unforgettable scents, a colorful mosaic of people and cultures with an authentic and unpredictable, sometimes wild character. The Orange Free State ceased to exist in 1902, but its spirit lives on in Etat Libre d’Orange. The logo, a tricolor cockade, symbolizes freedom and diversity. This symbol on the sharp corner of the bottle resembles the seal that seals the declaration of independence. Etienne has long worked in the luxury perfume industry, a world that has certain limits and ambitions. Most of his work was limited to simple and sterile olfactory statements. Perfume houses tried to please the greatest number of potential customers, and their approach to creating fragrances was based on the assumption that customers wanted something simple and uncomplicated. Disagreeing with this vision of perfumery, Etienne created his own house with a completely opposite ideology. The Etat Libre d’Orange collection includes more than 35 fragrances. Unconventional, sometimes scandalous, often provocative, but always delightful, they are filled with sincerity and the spirit of innovation. These are fragrances of a special category - intellectual, with their own point of view, they enter into a dialogue with their owner.
