Literary-inspired perfumes are common, but few go as far as Josh Meyer, creator and perfumer of Imaginary Authors. He created the brand to tell stories not on paper, but through unique fragrances, where each bottle becomes a chapter of a fictional novel. The Cobra & The Canary, released in 2012, was one of the first pieces in this unusual olfactory library.

The composition features notes of Asphalt, Iris, Leather Accord, Lemon, Hay, and Tobacco Blossom.
The literary plot follows 23-year-old Neil Orris, who, following a clairvoyant's advice, discovers a pristine 1964 Shelby Cobra Roadster in his father's abandoned barn. His first stop is the tobacco farm where his best friend, Ike, works, and they never look back. Longing for the racetracks of Palm Springs and the prizes that would keep them afloat, they travel through seedy motels and strong drinks, cool swimming pools and hot debutantes, burnt rubber and cigarette smoke. At each stop, the friends invent new aliases and personas, and their innocent game plunges them into a depth of decline and loneliness, degradation and disillusionment.
The name of the fragrance refers to a car, not a snake.
