Since its foundation, the Van Cleef & Arpels house has been inspired by the creative energy of love.
At the end of the 19th century, the young daughter of a gemstone dealer, Ethel Arpels, met the son of a gem cutter named Alfred Van Cleef. Thus began an amazing romantic story that became a wonderful and unexpected adventure.
In 1895, Ethel and Alfred got married. The lovers had much in common: youthful enthusiasm, a thirst for new discoveries, devotion to family traditions and a passion for precious stones.
But above all, they were inspired by the desire to create something long-lasting together. And so, in 1906, they founded the Van Cleef & Arpels house. Alfred began doing business with Ethel’s brother Charles. A talented merchant, Charles ran the Van Cleef & Arpels boutique on Place Vendôme in Paris. A few years later, Ethel's brother Julien joined the company, and in 1912, her brother Louis.
Over time, Van Cleef & Arpels has become synonymous with the most exquisite jewelry in the world. The love that once united the hearts of Ethel and Alfred comes to life in the romantic themes of Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry.
The Art of Perfuming Van Cleef & Arpels
1976 is the year that the perfume history of Van Cleef & Arpels begins. The first fragrance, First, is inspired by the jewelry creations of the house and symbolizes the charm of classics that never go out of fashion.
In 2009, Van Cleef & Arpels presented a haute couture perfume collection inspired by the treasures of nature. The compositions of the Collection Extraordinaire use essences that are selected with the same care as rare precious stones. Each fragrance is indicated by the formula number used by the master perfumer.
In 2017, a new dreamy chapter opened in the Collection Extraordinaire – Rêve de Matière. The exquisite design of the bottle is based on the play of light and shadow, reminiscent of the cutting of jewelry. The bottles are presented in boxes made of black lacquered wood with velvet upholstery.
In 2019, Van Cleef & Arpels released Matière Blanche – a rethinking of perfume components, built on the play of sensations and textures inspired by the color white. The bottles of the Matière Blanche collection are made in deep white.
