Carven (French — Carven) is a French fashion house founded in 1945 by designer and creative director Carmen de Tommatso. Madame Carven is the couturier's nickname. The brand's first fragrance, Ma Griffe, was released in 1946. Madame Carven developed it together with perfumer Jean Carle. Its name translates as "my stroke", "my claw". The floral-aldehyde composition was designed in a white and green color combination, thereby repeating the design of the white and green striped dress of the same name. In 1954, in honor of the tenth anniversary of the liberation of Paris, an airplane flew over the city, and instead of combat shells, hundreds of small parachutes flew out of its hatch, each of which had a bottle of Ma Griffe attached. Thus, Carmen de Tommatso paid tribute to the triumph of life and youth in free France. In 1957, eleven years after the launch of Ma Griffe, Vetiver was released, considered the first fragrance in the world to feature vetiver in the leading role. Madame Carvin dedicated the first men's composition of her brand to her husband. Its popularity and success were so high that today this classic fragrance is in the Osmotheque in Versailles along with other works of perfume art of the 19th and 20th centuries. In addition to the fact that Carvin created the uniform for Air France crews, in 1966 samples of the new Eau Vive fragrance were given to passengers of the airline's planes. In 1993, at the age of 84, the couturier left the company and retired. The brand fell into decline and was revived only in 2009 under the direction of designer Guillaume Henry. However, during the "lull" of the fashion line, new fragrances were periodically released. In 2013, Guillaume decided to revive the perfume line, reformed and adapted classic fragrances, and developed new ones. In 2014, the updated Ma Griffe and Vetiver were released. Perfumer Francis Kurkdjian was invited to develop the new fragrances, and the design bureau Thierry de Baschmakoff was entrusted with the appearance of the bottles. In 2017, the brand launched a "high" line of fragrances dedicated to traveling from Paris to cities in different countries.
